Weekly bulletin: Coronavirus impact on UK retail and shopper footfall behaviour

Coronavirus (or Covid-19) is having an unprecedented impact on our world, society and the economy. At Ipsos Retail Performance, we have created this asset, updated on a weekly basis, to show the ongoing impact of the virus on our high streets.

The following infographics and accompanying analysis is compiled using nationwide data on retail footfall from more than 4,000 non-food retailers across the UK, and compares year-on-year data.

Please see below for the weeks in chronological order, with the most recent data applicable to Sunday 22 March. The next update will be due on Monday 30 April.

Dr. Tim Denison, Director of Retail Intelligence at Ipsos Retail Performance said on Sunday 22 March:

“Coronavirus is having an unprecedented impact on our world, society and the economy. While bad weather may come and go, we are simply unsure about the longevity and reach that this pandemic will have on day-to-day life. It may lead to even more significant local lockdowns which would damage domestic as well as tourist trade for months to come. It is ironic that just after Brexit is finally done, and consumer confidence enjoys a boost, another contagion hits the country.”
